Patti Quinn, principal of Lincoln Elementary, said the program has used the same tactics at Lincoln Elementary for the last five years.

"Morning book buddies come before school begins," said Quinn, adding pupils are encouraged to first read the book at home with their parents."They re-read the book to their book buddy and then take the Accelerated Reader quiz to test their comprehension.Since we are dealing with the newest readers, we encourage them to read, read read."

The program also is in effect during afternoon classes at Lincoln, said Quinn.

"In the 40-minute library time, a book buddy spends about 20 minutes with each child," said Quinn.

Children attending Lincoln Elementary School also are benefitting from Yeske's information, according to Principal Patti Quinn.

The free presentations are a combination of fitness and nutritional information, Quinn said.

She noted the education is an asset and the lessons being instilled by Yeske "should be a top priority for all of us."

"Our staff this year is also very health conscientious of fitness and nutrition," Quinn said."We support each other in our efforts."

Quinn noted with Yeske's program the "students learn to link what they eat to how they feel.

Preschool and first-grade pupils at Lincoln have already learned the importance of eating fruits and vegetables and have studied how to classify each into categories, according to Quinn.

She explained the pupils then participate in an activity; however, they don't realize they are exercising because they are having "so much fun."

Obertance, who has worked as a custodian for Toronto School District for the past 12 years, created the indoor landscape on his own time and using his own funds, according to Patti Quinn, Lincoln Elementary principal.

'He purchased (all materials) for the display himself,' said Quinn, adding Obertance constructed the display over a weekend when pupils and faculty were absent. 'The kids enjoy it.

Quinn went on to say Obertance previously constructed a display for Halloween, complete with all the trappings of the spooky holiday, which also delighted pupils.

'(Obertance) always puts something in that's movable,' said Quinn, adding pupils have discovered the 'secret button' on Santa Claus that allows Santa to 'talk' and move. 'The tree branches come for the parking lot.

Quinn also said pupils enjoy being able to interact with the display, although that isn't necessarily what Obertance had in mind.

'People have a way of 'tweaking' (the display) to change it, but I put it back the way it was,' he said. 'I'm open to suggestions (on the design), but I like it the way it is.

Quinn said everyone is looking forward to Obertance's visions of the holidays.

'What a pleasant surprise they are,' said Quinn.

Patti Quinn, principal at Lincoln Elementary School, has created just such a program titled Ms. Quinn's Twice as Nice Book Club.

'I began the program in November, in which once a month, if not more, I will go in and read a story to the students,' Quinn said.

Quinn noted she's visited only first-grade pupils so far, but she said she hopes to get more involved and visit the other classrooms throughout the building.

'I read the students a story - something they are not familiar with - and use incentives such as puzzles and worksheets that go along with the story,' Quinn said.

She added she will visit the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County Toronto branch, should pupils want a book that is not found within the school's library.

Quinn said she uses props correlating with the story she is reading, giving the example of a purple plastic purse she used when recently reading to first-grade pupils 'Lily's Purple Plastic Purse.' She filled the purse with special pencils that were distributed to pupils at the story's conclusion.

Quinn noted a question-and-answer period follows each story.

First-grade pupils in Kathy Reeves' class recently listened as Quinn read to them.
