After English professor Griffith Brownlee refused to move the reading from the front of Bondurant Hall facing the Quad to the Student Union, UPD officers called Dean of Students Sparky Reardon, English department chair Patrick Quinn said.
...
"I guess (Sparky's) concern was we can't have anybody on campus because we could get white supremacists," Quinn said.
Quinn said he got a call from Brownlee early in the morning and came to campus immediately.
"According to Griffith, (the reading) would be disturbing," Quinn said.
"But when you think about it, that's what you are trying to do.
"I got on my high horse a little and said this is what universities are about," Quinn said.
"It's kind of scary in the one sense , it's about banned books, and they try and shut us down.
To assume automatically this is a bad thing says something about mindset," he said.
...
"Once I talked to Patrick Quinn and found out it was a part of the English department, it was straight."
The problem was with the amplification used to stage the reading, Reardon said.
He also said some communication or notification would have helped but that due to the nature of activities like this one, communication is not necessary.
