It might have taken Gerry Queenan a while to get used to a surfboad.

But the Cabra/Rathlee man prevailed and he also came out on top in the Castle Arms Hotel in Enniscrone last Saturday night where he was crowned Mayor of West Sligo.

Even though Gerry was the oldest contestant he showed all his experience to come through.

He said: "I more than doubled my quota of votes from the last time and managed to raise around E6000 for the west Sligo forum.

Gerry is taking his Mayoral duties very seriously.

"I think we also need a task force set up to provide more jobs in the area also".

It will be a busy year ahead for the farmer from Cabra as he is also chairman of the Sligo branch of the ICMSA and is involved in the West Sligo Rural Transport Initiative.

At a meeting of the ICMSA Dairy Committee in Limerick , Gerard Queenan, ICMSA Sligo Chairperson proposed the establishment of a viability premium for smaller scale dairy farmers in the Sligo region. more >
