An attorney for the company, Joseph Quandt of Traverse City, said most of the complaints have come from a handful of residents who would like to see the processing plant put out of business. Township officials said they've fielded more than 20 complaints in the past month about foul odors coming the plant, described by some residents as "putrid ... obnoxious" smells that prevent them from going outside on some days or opening their windows.Quandt, who was hired by the company about a month ago, said company officials are working to correct the problems, including the odor, because they are facing revocation of permits and possible fines if they do not comply with Department of Environmental Quality regulations.
    ...
Quandt said the company, owned by Christopher Hubbell of Williamsburg, simply made a mistake in not obtaining DEQ approval before using the new process.
    ...
"I think there were some mistakes made, but we're trying to correct that," Quandt said.Residents, though, said there were more than a few mistakes made. The smell from the plant has been a problem for three years, they said.At the state level at least four divisions of the DEQ have been investigating various violations at the fruit processing plant since last winter, including:- Unauthorized discharges from the plant into a roadside ditch which drained to a wetland area along Munro Road. The company said the discharge was from snow melt and other normal water runoff from the site, although the DEQ tested the water and said it was contaminated with suspended solids not indicative of snow melt or runoff.- Excessive irrigation of the wastewater from the plant to the property around the site.
    ...
Quandt said the company has already removed the cherry pits from the wetlands and will begin pumping water from the lagoon next week. The water then will be hauled to a treatment facility, he said.
