Quan is taking over as Osseo volleyball coach

Coach Bill Quan is open to learning more about his sport, even if the advice comes from his players.

Quan recently was named the new volleyball coach at Osseo High, replacing Kevin Anderson.

"Kelly tells us coaches what she learned from training in Colorado with the Junior Olympic Development Program," said Quan.

Quan said he also was in the right place at the right time when he first started coaching tennis at Park Center High.

The 26-year-old Brooklyn Park resident is a 1994 graduate of Park Center High.

While still in college at the University of Minnesota, he filled a void as the Pirates' junior varsity tennis coach.When the head coach suddenly left, he got the job and served for two years.

Quan moved over to Osseo High to teach chemistry.He also was an assistant volleyball and girls' basketball coach the past two years.

Quan also has experience as a volleyball player.While in college, he played on a co-rec intramural team that included three Osseo graduates.Quan has played in adult volleyball leagues for eight years.

"My philosophy is to put the best athletes on the floor and let them go at it," said Quan.

"Obviously, our goal is to get back to state and represent Osseo to the best of our ability," said Quan."The girls are excited and motivated."

When approached by the players, Quan organized the Osseo Junior Olympic development program last winter for eighth- and ninth-grade teams.

His goal is to build the program by teaching girls' volleyball fundamentals at an early age.Quan will run summer volleyball camps through the Maple Grove Parks and Recreation program.

Camps run June 24-27 for grades five to 10.Open gym for volleyball will be Mondays and Wednesdays in July.
