Tami Qualls, an English teacher at Galesburg High School said, I wanted to improve the community not only for my own children, but for kids I teach. Qualls, a participant in the Leadership Greater Galesburg program, learned the importance of considering everyone's ideas in decision-making, even those in the minority. Consensus building, as Qualls learned, is a critical skill in the new era of leadership.
In the past, people selected a leader and gave one person the responsibility of making decisions. Now, expectations have changed. You do not want to wait for a crisis to find a leader, said Sandra Fisk, director of Leadership Greater Galesburg.
