Michelle Quader, founder and president of the store, got the idea to make her own soaps by watching HGTV shortly after moving to Maryland three years ago.She experimented with different ideas and took aroma-therapy classes to perfect her soaps.
"In the beginning, I threw a lot of batches away," Quader said."But after a while, I came up with my own recipes."
She said that out of boredom, she began making her soaps and was soon giving them to friends and family as gifts.When she and her family moved from Florida, Quader decided to open Natural Bath Works in Glenwood, which she operated for two years, and moved the store to Sykesville earlier this fall.
In addition to the handmade soaps, Natural Bath Works also sells scarves knit by Quader, vintage jewelry, formal wear, lingerie, and gift baskets.
The store is home to a large selection of scents that includes pumpkin, oatmeal lavender, strawberry kiwi and kitchen citrus.The store's classic line of scents are 100 percent natural and made from plant oils, according to Quader.
Quader also makes custom gift baskets for weddings, bridal showers, birthdays, Christmas and other occasions.
Since moving her store from Glenwood, Quader is pleased with the warmth of the area.
"I love this town," Quader said."It's like a little Mayberry."
She said that people have stopped in to say hello and have welcomed her to Sykesville with open arms.
"They [the residents] have really embraced me in this town," she said."Some of my customers have even followed me out here."
Quader said that she likes how her store fits among the antique shops on Main Street.

"I wanted to make the store bath and body predominantly but also wanted to include other girlie things," Quader said.
Natural Bath Works is located at 7550 Main Street in Sykesville.
