Puckett said the trooper was on a routine patrol of the isolated park, which lies along the route of the 1857 Oregon Gold Rush by the Rogue River.
The man stopped him to ask for directions and in the course of the conversation, the trooper asked him for ID.Instead, the man pulled out a .38 snub nose revolver and fired at him.The trooper was able to return fire, killing the man, who fled 40 yards before collapsing, said Puckett.
The trooper was wearing a bulletproof vest and wasn't seriously injured, authorities said.
The fugitive was wanted for a March 15 bank robbery in Las Vegas.He is also the chief suspect in a March 19 bank robbery in Reno, Nev.
The .38 revolver was stolen, as were the plates on his pickup, said Puckett.

By Saturday morning, the park was back to normal, said Puckett.
