Managing director Janey Potts said fear of war, a declining stock market and the poor economy have taken their toll on contributions to the nonprofit theater group.
"The world is an unsure place right now, and people are being cautious about everything in their lives," she said.
The company produced an outdoor summer Shakespeare festival for 10 years under its previous name, Shakespeare in Santa Fe.It had planned to move this summer from St. John's College to city Railyard property and to produce Shakespeare's "As You Like It" and Moliere's "School for Wives."
But the company's board of directors decided this week to economize for a return next year.For now, the company plans a visiting production at the Railyard and three small productions around Santa Fe this summer.

The company relies largely on individual donations, followed by foundations' and government grants for about $350,000 a year, with ticket sales adding an additional $150,000, Potts said.
Two full-scale classical productions cost about $250,000 each, she said.
