   It started with print ads, says Randy Potter, Nautilus' former chief marketing officer, whose previous work on Soloflex's infomercials prompted him to integrate short-form spots into the company's advertising mix.
   
   During the 1980s, Randy Potter was the face and body of Soloflex. Today, he can be seen as the spokesman in print ads and infomercials for Bowflex.
   
   Potter says Bowflex, a company founded in 1986, used those spots to generate leads, which the company would then follow up on via direct mail and telemarketing. "I saw the success that Soloflex had on DRTV," says Potter, who adds that another key driver was the fact that Bowflex had few other options at the time, having lost its only customer to bankruptcy. "We had no other viable sales distribution channels available to us," he explains.

   Besides, says Potter, fitness brand marketers Soloflex and NordicTrack had done it, why couldn't Bowflex? Considered high-end for a direct response spot in the early 1990s, Bowflex needed to be demonstrated, had to tell a story and really reach out to consumers looking for a better fitness alternative than what they could find at their local health clubs or sporting goods stores.
   
   "Through DRTV, we were able to present the product in a very effective manner," says Potter.

   Along the way, Potter says the firm constantly tweaked and honed its DRTV strategy, sometimes sitting side-by-side with inbound telemarketers to gain customer insights.
