Former Lawrence County police officer John Potter, 42, pleaded not guilty to a charge of forgery after he was also accused of forging signatures on gun buyback documents in May 2005.

Indiana State Police are heading the investigation and say Hawkins, along with his former training officer John Potter, was allegedly signing federal documents with other officers signatures.

Potter is scheduled for a pre-trial hearing on August 8th with the trial to begin September 11th.

His brother, John Potter, who works at the police department, told him to hold off renewing his permit until he could purchase a lifetime one.

The lifetime handgun permits became available July 1.Before then handgun carriers had to buy a four-year permit and renew it.

Potter wasn't the only person heading to police stations.
