John W. Potter, M.A., Director of Youth Ministries
John Potter grew up in Ringoes, a little town in a relatively rural area of central New Jersey. His mother is a social worker at Trenton Psychiatric Hospital, and his father is a pastor for a small Presbyterian Church (USA) congregation in Holland Township, New Jersey. Coincidentally, John's father lived on Alexander Avenue in Montclair until age 12 and graduated from Princeton Seminary in the same year as Paul Leggett, although they never knew each other. John has two younger siblings, Susanna and Charles.
John is now a student at Princeton Seminary, where he has one more year of classes to complete his Master of Divinity degree. In 1991 he earned his bachelor's degree in Philosophy from Gordon College, and in 1996 he completed a master's degree program in Liberal Arts at the Graduate Institute of St. John's College in Maryland. In between college and his master's degree, John worked for a couple of years as a home health aid and on staff at a group home for developmentally disabled adults. He also spent a year with a Christian organization teaching English to university students in Anhui Province, China.
During his studies in Maryland, John held a job as an editor in a small publishing company. He began to feel the call to ordained ministry while attending First Presbyterian Church of Annapolis. In 1997 John returned to Asia to teach English. This time he taught primary and elementary age children at a "cram school" in Hsinchu, Taiwan. He stayed in Taiwan for over a year and a half, which included his last three months at a Chinese language program in Taipei. In the summer of 1999, he began his classes at Princeton.
John did his student internship at Grace Church last year, and he really enjoyed being part of the life of this church. When the Session at Grace invited John to do a more intensive full-time internship as the Interim Youth Ministries Director, he felt that God was providing him a great opportunity to learn about ministry. Part of John's vision for the year is to help the youth of Grace Church discover how important each of them is in God's sight.
