Pastor Joel Potter knows most churches incorporating sports into their outreaches stay away from competition, often choosing not to keep score or hand out individual awards.

But Potter also knows typical evangelistic outreaches have a 1 percent to 2 percent success rate in bringing participants to the church.

That's exactly why Potter, the youth pastor at Faith Bible Church, of 118 W. Ninth St., Williamstown, is starting a new ministry program that focuses on competition and challenging youths' minds, bodies and hearts.

It's called the Mid-Ohio Valley Sports Challenge, and it starts Wednesday for the first time in the area. This year's event will feature soccer and basketball tournaments of a six-on-six and three-on-three nature, with awards going to top teams, tournament MVPs and sportsmanship.

Potter said the competitive aspect of the outreach brings youth back to the event year after year.

Typically four to five from Potter's brother's outreach youth become regular members of the youth group, Potter said.

But the success of the outreach is not just determined by how many youth become regular youth group members either, Potter said. Potter said a gospel message mid-way through the tournament will go a long way toward making the event a success.

"Isaiah 55 says the word does not return void unto him and we know the seed will be planted in their hearts and their minds," Potter said. "Hopefully during those two days we'll be able to see a lot of fruit from that."

Potter is hoping this year's outreach will be just as popular as his brother's with youth from all over the region attending.

The 275-member church is helping the Nolan family in every way possible, Joel Potter, youth assistant pastor, said.

"I spent four hours with one of the children yesterday. It's very hard for them. They haven't seen dad, I believe, since last February, when he was called overseas," Potter said.

After surgery Monday, Nolan was reported doing better, Potter said, but was scheduled for the additional surgery today.
