Sylvia Pottenger, Central Suffolk Hospital Breast Health Outreach Case Manager, said she hopes her canvassing of stores, laundromats, restaurants, and other places where Hispanics go would pays off. She's conducting an outreach program -- in Spanish -- about the hospital's Taking Care of You program, which offers free mammograms to uninsured or underinsured Latino women. The American Cancer Society showed that Hispanic women have a high mortality rate from breast cancer compared to other groups because by the time they see a doctor, they have advanced cases of the disease, said Pottenger."If no insurance, no problem. No sitter, no problem. No transportation, no problem. No English, no problem," said Pottenger. As a one-on-one case manager, she removes these and other obstacles the women face in seeking early detection and treatment.
