A Tribute to Clinton Potruff
Ontario Corn Producers' AssociationJanuary 31, 2001, DATE : [ 01/31/2001 ]
Ontario agriculture lost one of its stars with the death, last week, of Clinton Potruff of Brant County. There was no more innovative or forward-thinking cash-crop farmer in Ontario.Clinton was a pioneer in the use of no tillage, and at the leading edge in use of new technology for weed control, crop fertilization, and field mechanization. He was a favourite cooperator for many university researchers.Clinton was active in the Ontario Soil and Crop Improvement Association and many other farm groups. His thirst for knowledge knew no bounds, and one could count on Clinton's attendance at almost any farm meeting where the subject matter involved better ways of farming. His positive attitude and love for agriculture were contagious.
Clinton was a delegate for the Ontario Corn Producers' Association for several years, and was one of the organization's strongest supporters. He never missed a meeting - county or regional meeting, semiannual meeting, annual meeting, or whatever. He was even there, in failing heath, at the OCPA semiannual meeting last September. And despite his health and low crop prices, he was as up beat as ever.
I consider Clinton Potruff to be one of the best and classiest farmers whom I've even known - and I've known (and know) lots of top-quality, classy farmers.
He is survived by his wife, Marian, who intends to keep farming at least in 2001, two daughters and a son, Beth, Janice and Garth, and several grandchildren.
I'm informed that Clinton is to be named, officially, as the Brant County Farmer of the Year, at an event this Saturday night in Brant County.
Ontario agriculture has lost one of its best.
