Currently, Barrett chairs the North Dakota Advisory Committee to the United States Commission on Civil Rights.She is also a board member of the Sakakawea Chapter of the Girl Scouts of America.Pursuing her Ph.D. in higher education at the University of North Dakota, Barrett holds a Master of Arts in English from St. Louis University and a B.A. in English with honors from Seton Hill University.Barrett has done additional course work in Lakota studies at Sinta Gieska University in Rosebud, South Dakota.
