The St. Xavier's and Ryan Group of Schools (XRIGS) is successfully led by its dynamic and visionary Founder-Chairman, Dr. A. F. Pinto.Under his leadership, success has become a habit for the Group of schools.
Making learning a life-long love affair is Dr. Pinto's objective at the 80 exceptional schools he heads.The responsibility of imparting quality education to 2,00,000 students in 14 states, through 8,000 trained teachers, is indeed awesome.But no task is too small for this educationist of extraordinary calibre, who served as the millennium Sheriff of Mumbai in 2000.
Born in Mangalore on August 28, 1944, Dr. A.F. Pinto arrived in Mumbai in the early 70's after completing early education in Mangalore and later on at Loyola College, Madras.
His teaching career began with a brief stint at St. Joseph's Boys' School, Bangalore and later on in Mumbai.
A man with a mission, Dr. A. F. Pinto took up from scratch the task of spreading the light of quality education in India and providing the infrastructure needed to realise this dream.The first school in the Group was set up in 1976 and the network soon spread all over India.
Dr. Pinto introduced innovations in the learning process - Play-Way methods of teaching for children up to the Primary Section, Computer Literacy Classes from Standard I as early as 1986, He reduced bulging schoolbags and the pressures of homework and exams while encourageing an open, interactive and collaborative environment in the classroom.It was he who introduced education through the lens. through opportunities for in-house film-making and the launch of Ryan TV at Ryan international School, Malad.
He spearheaded and hosted innovative events at the National and International level; The first Indian Model United Nations at Delhi in 2001 and the First International Children's Theatre Festival 2002 in Mumbai.These have become annual events, drawing participation from a large number of schools both in India and abroad.
At the international level, the schools spearheaded by Dr. Pinto were one of the first to adopt the concept of Quality Control Education.
Dr. Pinto believes that India has Olympic champions in the making.In 1996, he opened up a world of opportunity for talented young people hungry for a global-class training environment with the Ryan International Sports Club in 1996.This Club is open to youth from a number of suburbs all over Mumbai city and has hosted events which attracted participation from over 10,000 people, where several District, State and National records were broken.Dr. Pinto's concern for underprivileged children saw him set up the Anubhav School in Gurgaon, Haryana and the Radiant School at New Panvel, Navi Mumbai.Here, education is provided to the children of construction workers, slum dwellers and those from impoverished homes.These children are helped to write the SSC exams and are given vocational education.Recently, a child educated at the Anubhav School topped the Board in Haryana.
Senior citizens too have been the beneficiaries of Dr. Pinto's concern.On 1st October, 2003, the Honourable President of India Shri A. P. J. Abdul Kalam presented the Samson A. Daniel Award for the highest contribution made by Dr. Pinto to Help Age India.He has mobilised aid for victims of the cyclone in Orissa and the earthquake in Bhuj, constructing houses, borewells and schools and providing medicines, food and clothing.
Environmental Conservation is yet another cause close to Dr. Pinto's heart.
A massive Nationwide Tree Planting Campaign was launched 2 years ago by the Ryan Foundation with a commitment to plant 10 lakh saplings nationwide every year.For his significant contribution to the field of Education and Environmental Conservation, he was awarded the Indira Gandhi Paryavaran Puraskar 1999 in the organisation category by His Excellency Shri Bhaironsingh Shekhawat, the Vice President of India.
To crown his achievements, Dr. Pinto has been recognised as the International Man of the Year 2001 by the International Biographical Centre, Cambridge, U.K.
