Dr. Elizabeth Pietras is a radiologist at Maine Medical Center. She said that depending on a woman's breast tissue, it's not uncommon to require an ultrasound on top of a mammogram.
"If we do a mammogram and the breast tissue is dense and it doesn't adequately assess the breast tissue, I would recommend an ultrasound be done as well," she explained.
Pietras said denser tissue is typically more common in younger women, so women under the age of 30 presenting with a lump usually undergo an ultrasound first.
Women over 30 typically undergo both procedures.Because the occurrence of breast cancer increases in women over 40, often they are given a mammogram first.
According to Pietras, "Mammograms can still pick up the breast cancers you and I will never feel.
