Rockland Mayor Jean Pierre Pierre commented on the decision, saying, "The Town of Rockland and the Ontario Clean Water Agency have always managed to provide the best services possible at the lease possible costs to our citizens.The signing of this operational contract reflects a continuation of our commitment."

The announcement was made at a demonstration launching the service in the Jean-Marc Lalonde Arena attended by Mayor Jean Pierre Pierre of Clarence-Rockland & Jean-Marc Lalonde MPP . The service provides service at speeds up to 2 Mb/sec for residential use and 5 Mb/sec for business use.

Mayor Pierre commented "There is a huge demand for this service from both home and business users.The business community has been very active in helping me work with Storm to bring the service into this area.Jean-Marc has supported my efforts from the start and I am very pleased that we are here today.What this means to Rockland is that we can compete on an equal footing with Ottawa, our residents will not have to move into the city to enjoy the same benefits of high-speed Internet."

"We have worked very closely with Mayor Pierre to make this event happen" said Mr. Lalonde "I believe that with this introduction of service in Rockland from Storm, I am now the MPP with the most highly connected rural/urban riding in Canada. Clarence-Rockland Mayor Jean Pierre Pierre said he also indirectly subsidized DC DiagnostiCare Inc. with about $11,000 in municipal monies over three years to help pay the salary of one of its employees."A year later, they wanted more subsidies," Mr. Pierre said.

In a letter on Thursday to Jean Pierre Pierre, mayor of the Clarence-Rockland municipality, Robert Bourdeau, medical officer of health for Eastern Ontario, said that the turbidity in the region's water was above provincial norms.

The problem is lack of filtration, says Mr. Pierre, as parasites are not eliminated by the chlorine in the well water used by the three hamlets."The turbidity is always there," he said."It's going to keep coming back, so we have to do something."

Mr. Pierre wants to extend the water filtration plant in Rockland so pipelines can deliver filtered water to the hamlets.An application for a government grant was made in ebruary, but Mr. Pierre is hoping to have the process rushed considering the present situation."We're ready," he said.
