As Milford manager Rich Piergustavo prepares his troops for their fifth trip to the American Legion State Tournament in the last seven years, he knows exactly what it will take to survive and advance.

After all, Piergustavo brought Milford all the way to the American Legion World Series back in 2001.

Now in his 13th year at the helm of one of the most successful Legion baseball teams in the state, Piergustavo also knows there won't be many easy outs in the state tournament, which begins at 9:30 this morning at Hudson's Riverside Park when Milford takes on Walpole in the first game of the tournament.
    ...
"I don't think you can get in the tournament on a down note," Piergustavo said.
    ...
"That was probably the worst game we played all year," Piergustavo said.
    ...
Everyone in the lineup has contributed," Piergustavo added."It's been someone different every night."

It's not surprising someone different has stepped up for Milford every night, as its roster is filled with top-caliber players.
    ...
"I thought that was the turning point of the season," Piergustavo added.

He's played every game but one at short, he's a young player and I thought it would take the pressure off a little bit," said Post 59 manager Rich Piergustavo of his game time decision regarding Muscatello.
    ...
"Kelly is getting better every single day," said Piergustavo.
    ...
To come in like he did as a sophomore with no varsity experience, is pretty tremendous," Piergustavo said of his closer.

Rich Piergustavo, Hopedale athletic director and manager of the Milford Post 59 Legion baseball team, hopes the players named in the Mitchell report will consider making public service announcements talking about steroid use.

"I think (former slugger and accused steroid user Mark) McGwire missed a tremendous opportunity to talk to kids (when accusations first came out)," said Piergustavo.

Hopedale athletes, like many in Massachusetts, attend preseason meetings with athletic officials to discuss drug and alcohol use, among other issues that will jeopardize a player's time on the field.

"Kids are a lot more aware of this stuff than they were five or 10 years ago," said Piergustavo.
    ...
Even so, the report should be a warning to young people to be careful when they choose role models, said Piergustavo.

"We have to look at ourselves and see what we value," he said.

    ...
"We got some pitches to hit and we put them in play and we hit the ball hard," said Piergustavo.

"Peter had been struggling all year until he had three hits against West Boylston in the last game," Milford manager Rich Piergustavo said.
    ...
Piergustavo noted that Guilmette had control of all his pitches.
    ...
That's been the most consistent part of our game," Piergustavo said, despite four errors.
    ...
"To keep their composure and come back to win that game was a great thing," Piergustavo said.

Milford enters the postseason on a high note with its offense clicking against a good Northboro staff.

"The most important thing in the summer is to get everyone playing well by the middle of July," Piergustavo said.

"I'm just glad there's a pitch limit," Milford coach Rich Piergustavo said, "because I think he would have shut us down the rest of the night. He's a pretty special pitcher."
    ...
    "We make pitchers work," Piergustavo.
    ...
"A couple of bad hops and it's 7-6," Piergustavo said, "but Mike Priete came in and did an outstanding job and Tyler didn't falter."
    ...
"To have the presence of mind," Piergustavo said, "to take that ball off Mark's chest and still throw a strike to second base was a great play."
