Sunday afternoon, Piercy's parents, Buddy and Janet, were to take him to Eppley Airfield in Omaha for his flight back to Texas, where he's been training with his communications unit to go to Iraq either in late January or early February, he said.

Even though this was a going away gift of sorts for Piercy, this group gathers annually on Jan. 1 for even a few minutes of skiing, according to Buddy Piercy, 64, who has planned the event for the past 40 years.

"Some years it's just too cold," Buddy said.

The group made an extra effort to get the annual skiing excursion in this year - even spending three days to break enough ice on the small lake to allow the ski boat to maneuver, Buddy said.

"Cory said he wanted to go skiing today because he probably won't get to go again for at least a year," Buddy said.

"We try to do this every year just to get to ski in the middle of winter," continued Buddy, who formerly owned Valley Marine with Janet."This is what we all love to do.This isn't a big run we have today, but it's big enough to get our adrenaline running.There's some open water here.We use it for a test run for boats."

Buddy touted the sport of water skiing as a family activity.

"It's a great way to spend time with your kids," he said."You don't have to be as competitive as we are."

Buddy has won the American Water Ski Association National Water Ski Tournament the past three years in his age division and is qualified as a national tournament judge.Janet, who is also a champion skier, is qualified as an international tournament judge.

"It's just the idea of doing something together," Buddy continued.
