Lancaster Bureau of Fire Chief Jeffrey Pierce announced his retirement Thursday morning after 25 years with the city department.
"We have a mayor that supports the fire department," Pierce said."That makes me feel good, and I know the administration is going to go forward."
Pierce has served as chief for the past 7½ years, having been promoted from battalion chief by former Mayor Charlie Smithgall.

Pierce is leaving to become a safety manager at Tyson Foods Inc. in New Holland.Tuesday will be his last day with the city.
