Lancaster Bureau of Fire Chief Jeffrey Pierce announced his retirement Thursday morning after 25 years with the city department.

"We have a mayor that supports the fire department," Pierce said."That makes me feel good, and I know the administration is going to go forward."

Pierce has served as chief for the past 7½ years, having been promoted from battalion chief by former Mayor Charlie Smithgall.

Lancaster Fire Chief Jeff Pierce said funding is as much of a problem for him as it is for suburban volunteer departments.

You talk to them ( volunteer departments ) and their donations are down , they have to do the training , and they have to set up for fund-raisers.It's not easy , he said.

The state's current funding sources , including low-interest loans , favor the volunteer organizations and not the municipal departments.

We're kind of excluded in a lot of ways and we're a very critical part of the infrastructure of the city , he said.
