Joseph Piemont, executive vice president of strategic services with CHS, met with more than 40 doctors Wednesday evening to field questions and listen to concerns about a proposed merger of longtime Cabarrus health care institution NorthEast Medical Center and health care giant Carolinas HealthCare.

And while Piemont was able to provide information to doctors - most of them independent physicians - about operational issues, NorthEast psychiatrist Dr. Jonathan McKinsey said there were not a lot of details about the merger itself.
    ...
Piemont also said CHS plans to add to medical services in the county, not to consolidate them.

"Our plan, our approach," Piemont said, "is to develop services locally, not curtail them. We're about growth."
    ...
While details of the merger may be coming slowly, Piemont said there will be updates up until the deal is finalized in June.

"I think you're going to see it incrementally," he said."I just don't think you're going to see it daily."

"Our agreement is at the large system level," Piemont said, adding that he believes specifics must trickle down from that point.

How CHS determines locations of new facilities is based on patient demographics and research conducted by the CHS management company, said Joe Piemont, executive vice president for strategic services. It is not usually based on requests from its physician base in Carolinas Physician Network.

"We don't dictate to physician groups, but we do talk to them about participating in new initiatives," Piemont said."Our doctors are practicing medicine.
    ...
Piemont said CHS is flexible in the partnerships it makes - meaning mergers aren't the only way CHS expands.Stanly Regional Medical Center formed a strategic alliance with CHS to build its Stanly Regional West medical park in Locust.Stanly Regional was looking for capital to build the medical park, but did not merge with CHS.In addition, cardiologists from CHS' Sanger Clinic staff Rowan Regional's new Smith Heart and Vascular Center.

"We make arrangements that are beneficial to both parties," Piemont said.

CHS is looking more at expanding outpatient care facilities rather than building new hospitals.Piemont said more and more services are being provided on an outpatient basis. The strategy is to build smaller outpatient facilities where the population is and will be so patients don't have to go to the main hospital campuses.

"In expanding primary care, we're in a very active relationship with the North Carolina Research Campus about putting offices there," Piemont said.
    ...
Neither Tarwater nor Piemont would comment on CHS's plans to expand further into Rowan County beyond Kannapolis, but Piemont said CHS is watching the situation in Rowan County.

"Patients have relationships with physicians already there," Piemont said.
