More than 900 families -- up from around 250 just several years ago -- applied for baskets this year through income-qualified federal programs like Head Start, Womans' Infants' and Childrens' (WIC) food program, and the Weatherization Assistance Program, according to Theresa Piekarz, an administrative assistant at the EOC.
"It's the most we've ever had," she said, referring to the number of applicants. She said the council will spend upwards of $22,500 to feed families this holiday season.
The food baskets consist of groceries for a typical Thanksgiving spread, including stuffing, cranberry sauce, potatoes, canned corn, and a $10, $12, or $15 certificate -- depending on the size of the recipient's family -- for a bird at Price Chopper.
Piekarz said distributions took place last week at EOC sites in Saratoga and Corinth, and at the Jefferson-Vanderbilt Terrace residence.
Piekarz said the council still needs contributions, but felt confident it would receive adequate funding. The EOC had collected about $10,000 of the $22,000 it needs to cover the cost of dinners distributed for Thanksgiving.
"The amount of support we get from this community is amazing," she said, adding that money from Skidmore is "a tremendous help." -
