‘‘What is interesting is that immigrants who have been in Canada the longest have the worst health profiles and actually resemble other Canadians in that respect," said Claudio Perez of Statistics Canada's health division.
‘‘It's been speculated that part of the reason for these patterns is perhaps that immigrants adopt unhealthy North American habits, such as smoking or poor nutrition, over time."
The most recent surveys, however, do little to confirm this.
In fact, says Perez, ‘‘it actually turns out that immigrants never really fully become like their non-immigrant counterparts.
‘‘In terms of physical activity, it's actually the Canadian-born population that had the healthiest habits," he said. ‘‘But in terms of heavy drinking, overweight, smoking and fruit and vegetable consumption, it was immigrants that had the healthiest habits."
So the reason why longer-term immigrants lose their health advantage remains something of a mystery.
It may be they weren't as healthy when they entered Canada as today's rigorously tested newcomers, who face strict medical examinations earlier in the visa process. -
