   Dr. Ernest M. Perea has joined the medical staff of the Hawarden Community Clinic and Hawarden Community Hospital.
   
   A graduate of the Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha, Dr. Perea completed his family practice residency at the Mercy Mayo Family Practice Clinic in Des Moines. Following his residency, he delivered care at the Chinle Navaho Reservation in Arizona, as a locum tenens physician in Ohio, and in many communities in Iowa.
   
   "Dr. Perea brings a wealth of knowledge and skill to the Hawarden area community," said Becky Jacobs, manager of Hawarden Community Clinic.

   A native of New Mexico and former resident of southern California, Dr. Perea is fluent in three languages: English, Spanish and Russian. Prior to entering medical school, he was a Russian linguist in the U.S. Air Force, and later worked for the National Security Agency (NSA) in Washington.
   
   Because Dr. Perea is fluent in Spanish, the Hawarden Community Clinic is looking forward to better serving the needs of Spanish-speaking patients, according to Dr. Perea.
   
   "We welcome patients who speak only Spanish from throughout the area," he said. "We will be very proud to serve the Hispanic community in language and culture."
   
   Upon graduation from the Creighton University School of Medicine, Dr. Perea was awarded the Dr. Maurice Stoner, MD Award, special recognition of the graduating physician who demonstrated the highest degree of compassion.

   Ernest M. Perea, M.D. - Health Advisory Board Member Dr. Perea served in the United States Air Force from 1992 - 1998. Fluent in both Spanish and Russian, he had top secret clearance as a Russian translator and trainer of military linguists in Misawa, Japan. He was also affiliated with the USAF Security Agency of the National Security Agency in Washington, DC. Dr. Perea earned his MD degree from Creighton University in Omaha, NE in 1996. He did specialty training in Family Practice at the Mercy/Mayo program in Des Moines, IA from 1997 - 2000. He became a diplomate of the American Board of Family Practice in 2000, and has been in practice since then in Family Practice and Emergency Care in integrated clinic, hospital and nursing home environments. With his extensive knowledge of Spanish language and culture, Dr. Perea has had a focus on Hispanic patient care. He has also developed a meticulous process to verify patients' understanding of their responsibility for their own care, which he has found to improve their care and outcomes, as well as reduce risk and litigation. This is a perfect match to the Healing America approach to wellness, and Dr. Perea sees tremendous opportunities for the present and the future.
