All of the nostalgia, and excitement about the theater's reopening, helps to make Amy Perdue's job of overseeing the renovations a pleasure.
As Henrico's cultural arts coordinator, Perdue has been involved in the transformation since the county bought the theater in 1999. Everything from historic paint analysis to careful recreation of the original carpet design has been put to use to preserve the character of the theater.
At town halls held soon after the theater was acquired, says Perdue, the community asked for three things: "music, movies, and programs for kids." Perdue foresees everything from dance recitals to lectures and travelogues in the future, and cites a line-up so far that includes a Churchyard Grass concert, an Irish dance troupe for St. Patrick's Day, and a Pink Panther film festival. -
