Connect South West e-business manager and internet expert Wendy Perdon says the anonymity of the internet, combined with the high home usage by people under 18, made it a haven for predators wanting to link up with children. And many times, parents' ignorance exacerbated problems."Parents are aware of stranger danger, road safety and every other aspect of life, but not the dangers of the internet," she said."The problem is greater than internet porn.A kid may be in a chat room talking about a science project with someone they think is another kid, but it could be a predator looking to set up an appointment."The issue is so real that major chat room hosts are shutting down because they cannot guarantee the safety of users."Ms Perdon said with about 75 per cent of homes with children under 18 online, parents had to take responsibility to teach their children about the dangers and monitor internet use."It has become a big problem," she said."Parents need to approach it the same as any other issue with their children."She said programs were also available to filter internet material and control usage.
