Maria Peradenic, the assistant programmer at Burnaby Village Museum, tries to conjure the spirit of Tom Irvine, which is believed to haunt his tiny two-room cabin on the Museum grounds.

"We mix a little bit of history with a little mystery," said museum assistant programmer Maria Peradenic, one of the tour guides
"We try to keep the integrity of the museum," she stressed.

The Bell's Dry Goods building, built in 1922, doesn't normally have volunteers working in it, but during a 1987 visit, psychic Joan Fontaine claimed to not only feel the presence of a little girl but saw and spoke to her, Peradenic said.

Not wanting to spoil the fun for those attending, Peradenic didn't want to reveal too much in the way of stories that will be told on the tour. Suffice it to say that a lot has to do with the 26-acre property's history - first as single-family homes, then as a seminary for Benedictine monks (1939-54), followed by a 10-year stint starting in 1954 as home to a religious cult called the Canadian Temple for the Universal Foundation of the More Abundant Life, before the City of Burnaby purchased it in 1971 and turned it into a city arts complex
Unlike Hollywood movies, the ghost stories have little to do with highly visible spirits swooping down on their victims and driving them outside. "It's 'yeah, I was really uneasy there, I felt strange there,'" Peradenic said. "A lot of times it's just a feeling.
There's also still a stigma attached to being a believer of ghosts. But, every year after the tours, more people come forward with stories of their own
Peradenic herself had a rather unsettling experience one October while running one of the haunted tours. She was in one of the dark upper floors of Ceperley House and had to turn on a CD of spooky sound effects. The portable stereo, located inside a closet, had been acting up on the tour and after Peradenic got the CD playing, it suddenly stopped. She aimed her flashlight at the off lever switch and the machine had been completely shut off
"It was a little different," she said with some understatement.
...
As Peradenic said, "It's a little chilly - the chills don't all come from the weather though.
