James Penton: Rampant Apostate or Revealer of Truth?
As a former J.W., I remember the misinformation campaign carried out against Mr. Penton. We heard all sorts of stories: Mr. Penton had a pride problem; he'd tried to lure the weaker ones away from meetings and field service; he'd attempted to sell one of his books at the conventions.
We viewed him as the worst-case scenario: a Witness gone bad, in the grips of demonic forces, an out-and-out apostate. At no time did I ever hear that he had exposed the Society's false teachings/failed prophecies.
Later, researching those same topics, I stumbled across a site referencing his book. The title said it all: Apocalypse Delayed.
The Watchtower Society is quick to expose other religions' supposed false teachings, while they disfellowship members for engaging in the same activity--if it's directed at their own organization!
M. James Penton was a professor emeritus in the Department of History at the University of Lethbridge.
He discovered the long and convoluted trail of failed prophecies perpetrated by leaders of the Jehovah's Witnesses.
James was deeply disturbed over the information he had uncovered and decided to write a letter to the Society about the issues that were troubling him.He held impressive academic qualifications and had written a book entitled Jehovah's Witnesses in Canada , which told the story of the Witnesses' fight for civil liberties under Canadian law; he'd served in organizational positions of responsibility such as elder and on a local hospital committee which dealt with blood transfusion cases . . . this all counted for naught.
He was removed as an elder and disfellowshipped for speaking out. This resulted in a major schism in southern Alberta.Over eighty persons left Lethbridge Witness congregations.News of this was was publicized throughout Canada and abroad.
Unfortunately, James paid a heavy price for his honesty. He suffered two heart attacks and was forced to undergo a bowel resection, likely caused, in part, from the stress that resulted from his expulsion. He was forced to take early retirement from teaching in 1990.
James remains active and has rebuilt his life.He and his wife moved to Mexico and built a new home. He's edited journals and written about Jehovah's Witnesses for encyclopedias.
His book Apocalypse Delayed: The Story of Jehovah's Witnesses has received wide recognition as an excellent overview of Watchtower history.
