POLK CITY | The Ridge League of Cities has recognized Mayor Donald Penton for his lifetime of service to Polk City by giving him the Nettie Draughon Award as the outstanding municipal official of the year.

"It was an honor for me to receive this, particularly from the Ridge League and in Nettie Draughon's name," Penton said.
The award recognizes public officials for their contributions to their communities and the league.It is named for the late Nettie Draughon, who worked in local government for 57 years until retiring in 1997.
Shortly after Penton was first elected in 1978, Draughon, the former city manager in Plant City, took the young Polk City official under her wing, smoothed the rough edges and taught him how to run a city effectively, the mayor said.

City officials tried to get by on the cheap, hiring city managers who weren't qualified but would work for low pay, Penton said.

The league presented Penton with the award at its annual dinner Wednesday at Polk Community College in Winter Haven.
During his 30 years in office, Penton also became active in the Ridge League, which represents communities in five counties along the Florida Ridge.He is finishing a one-year term as the league's president.
