Alex, 31, who had been diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma five months earlier, was undergoing chemotherapy treatment at the time of the wedding.It never occurred to the couple to put off the ceremony.

"It was a good time to have it," Alex said in a phone interview from their Ketchikan house.

Alex, who now teaches junior high social studies at Schoenbar Middle School, stayed behind in Anchorage substitute teaching and working for the state Fish and Game department.They did the long-distance thing for two years until Alex packed up and moved to Dillingham.A year and a half later, Alex presented her with a ruby ring inside a tent they had set up in their living room on Christmas Eve.

"I knew it was inevitable that we would end up marrying," he said.

As they were moving into their house, the same week Alex was to start chemotherapy, their dog was hit by a car and killed in front of their new home.

Alex finished chemotherapy last week and heads to Seattle for further prognosis this week.

"I'm not too worried about it," he said.
