Back then, the center -- paid for in large part by millions of dollars in donations from the community -- still was a dream in the making for many people, said Terry Pence, the center's senior administrative director.
...
Cancer patients would go from one office to another, and then back again to have all their treatment done," Pence said."Now, everything they need can be found right here, right through these doors."
The "everything they need" Pence refers to includes the diagnosis and treatment of cancer using both chemotherapy and radiation to kill or shrink cancer cells.
In addition to the medical treatment, patients at the center have access to additional services -- from counseling and support programs for themselves and family members to access of an exercise lab and dietitian to improve their health before, during and after treatment.
"What's available to us here has changed the way we look at and treat cancer in Muncie," Pence said of the center, located on the southside of BMH with an entrance off Gilbert Street.
...
Pence and the nine physicians who work there -- four radiation oncologists and five medical oncologists, Songer included -- aren't the only ones to remark on changes in care brought about as a result of the center.
...
Said Pence, "I get letters every week about the positive experiences people have had here.
...
Pence said he's been contacted by hospitals building their own cancer centers that wish to emulate local services, most notably BMH Cancer Center's boutique.
Customers can purchase cancer awareness goods from water bottles to key chains at the boutique, but the space is more than just a gift shop, Pence said.
...
"Everyone loves Mary," Pence said.
...
Pence said employees of the center have been amazed by the popularity of the exercise lab."Ideally, we'd love to expand this area, we're just a little land-locked right now," he noted.
Expectations exceeded
Asked what's in store next for the center, Pence said he's unsure what to expect."Any expectations I had five years ago when we opened the center have all been exceeded," he said.
