Mr. Pence had worked as a dairy and sharecrop farmer, worked as a driver for Greenbrier Dairies and Ronceverte Feed Store, owned and operated a grocery store, service station and Pence's Tourist Home in Union.
He served as an instructor for farm training in Monroe and Greenbrier counties, as a first-aid and defensive driving instructor, Monroe County truant officer, served on the Selective Service Board, served as transportation director for Monroe County Schools, served on the Board of Directors of Southern States and was a charter member of the Monroe County Development Corp.
Mr. Pence was an active member of several service clubs in Monroe County; he was instrumental in the location of Moncove Lake and served on the Monroe County Health Council in the development of the Monroe County Health Center.
He was a member and elder of Union Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Pence was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served at Pearl Harbor during World War II.
