Duggan's owner Larry Payne donated the buffet and $1,000 toward a goal of $30,000 in seed money. He has used his own landscapers to maintain the median grass near his restaurant. But the area near 13 Mile deserves a median garden like one recently planted near 11 Mile -- bordering Royal Oak, Berkley and Huntington Woods -- and another at Maple Road in Birmingham, Payne said.
The exact location won't be decided until organizers know how much money they can raise and how much they can get in grants. The new gardens won't be as elaborate as Birmingham's greenery, which cost about $500,000, said officials of the Woodward Avenue Action Association -- coordinators of the drive.
"I'd like to see it a little simpler down here," Payne said.
