"Green Mountain Energy Company's mission is to change the way power is made," stated A. Clifton Payne Jr., eastern region president for Green Mountain Energy Company. "Our Niagara Mohawk Renewable Energy Program customers are already helping support new renewable electricity generation in New York State. Thanks to their demand for pollution-free electricity, Green Mountain Energy Company will support the Madison Windpower facility with wind purchases for the next two years."

Payne explained that under the new program, approved by the New York State Public Service Commission (NYSPSC), Niagara Mohawk utility customers can elect to have their electricity produced from cleaner and renewable resources -- without switching electric providers.

"Governor McGreevey and the State of New Jersey are helping to lead by example," said A. Clifton Payne, Jr., eastern region president for Green Mountain Energy Company."Making electricity causes more air pollution than any other industry.Choosing cleaner and renewable sources of electricity can, over time, help improve air quality.""That's like not driving 136,831 trips by car up the length of the New Jersey Turnpike - - which is more than 20 million miles," Payne illustrated.

Green Mountain is the only company selling clean power in the state, said Clifton Payne, president of Green Mountain's mid-Atlantic region.

As more customers sign up for clean power, there would be greater incentive for plants providing such power to increase their output, Payne said.

The Rev. Fletcher Harper of St. Luke Episcopal Church in Haworth said it was not difficult to get his congregation to sign on.

"We had an engineer and our financial officers look at the plan," he said, "and chose to go with it.

"Green Mountain Energy Company's mission is to change the way power is made," stated A. Clifton Payne Jr., eastern region president for Green Mountain Energy Company."Our Niagara Mohawk Renewable Energy Program customers are already helping support new renewable electricity generation in New York State.

As a result, residential and commercial customers from Albany to Buffalo can now choose 100 percent pollution-free Green Mountain Energy(R) electricity.

Green Mountain Energy(R) electricity consists of 50 percent new wind and 50 percent water (hydro generation sources), and is available to Niagara Mohawk customers for 1.3 cents per kilowatt hour in addition to their base rate charged by Niagara Mohawk. The 100 percent pollution free electric service costs just about $7 more per month than customers currently pay for more polluting electricity -- the cost of a gourmet cup of coffee a week.Further, the price is guaranteed not to change through December 31, 2004."This means that no matter how much energy prices increase over the coming months, the rates that Niagara Mohawk customers who choose Green Mountain Energy(R) electricity pay will not change," concluded Payne.

"New York households now have an easy and powerful way to reduce their share of CO2 pollution. In fact, an average* New York household purchasing Green Mountain Energy(R) electricity for an entire year can avoid over 3,100 pounds of CO2, said, Thomas H. Rawls, Chief Environmental Officer for Green Mountain Energy Company."That's as much CO2 as a car makes in over 3,400 miles of driving. It would take over 200 trees an entire year to remove that much CO2 from the air."

Green Mountain Energy Company began marketing its 100 percent pollution- free electricity to Niagara Mohawk customers in upstate New York in September 2002.

    A. Clifton Payne, president of Green Mountain Energy Company's Eastern Region, said the links between the provider, Niagara Mohawk, and the customer is a strength of the program.

"This is a win-win situation for customers," Payne said."They remain with Niagara Mohawk, receiving the reliability they've come to trust.Meanwhile, they're able to purchase pollution-free electricity that is produced entirely in New York. Each customer will help clean the air we breathe by reducing their share of carbon dioxide from electricity generation."

Clifton Payne Jr., eastern regional president for Green Mountain Energy Co., said solar energy is further proof that their customers can help change the way power is made in New Jersey.

"Making electricity is the leading cause of industrial air pollution in the U.S., emitting billions of tons of carbon dioxide annually," Payne said."The large solar electricity facility will help avoid 40 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually. That reduces as much carbon dioxide pollution as not driving more than 2,000 trips by car the length of the Atlantic City Expressway, adding up to more than 90,000 miles."

The solar panels will be maintained by Sun Power Electric, who also installed the panels. The panels are 2-foot by 4-foot that take up more than 12,000 square feet of the store's roof, which officials said is enough to fill the Phillies' infield at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia. The 52-kilowatt system will feed its generated electricity in a grid that supplied power through the region, officials said.
