"This is already helping us in programs that are in early phases of the clinic, where they allow us to understand whether polymorphisms exist that could be affecting outcomes in disease progression," said Scott Patterson, Amgen's executive director of medical sciences.

Scott Patterson Joins Celera Genomics as Senior Director for Proteomics

    THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2000 9:49 AM- BusinessWire

ROCKVILLE, Md., Nov 16, 2000 (BW HealthWire) -- Celera Genomics (NYSE: CRA), a PE Corporation business, announced today that Scott Patterson, Ph.D., has joined Celera as senior director, proteomics.

In this new position, Dr. Patterson will be a leading member of the team implementing Celera's proteomics strategy.Specifically, he will complete the building of the laboratory infrastructure that includes cell biology, protein separations, and mass-spectrometry to establish Celera's industrial-scale, high-throughput proteomics facility. To achieve this, Dr. Patterson will leverage Celera's established expertise in high-throughput genomics and bioinformatics, as well as Celera's growing supercomputing infrastructure.

Dr. Patterson comes to Celera from Amgen Inc. bringing with him more than 20 years of scientific experience predominantly in protein analysis and its application to understanding biological processes. Most recently he served as an associate director of research and head of the department of biochemistry and genetics. In this position he was responsible for the proteomics program, which he developed, and the mouse genetics platforms.Prior to joining Amgen, Dr. Patterson was a staff investigator at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York.He also held several positions at The University of Queensland in Australia during which time he earned his Ph.D. in Physiology there in 1989.

Scott D. Patterson, Ph.D., Executive Director, Medical Sciences, Amgen, Inc. Dr. Patterson returned to Amgen Inc., California in 2003 and is an Executive Director in the Medical Sciences function leading the Molecular Sciences department (with the Computational Biology department also reporting to him). Medical Sciences is responsible for conducting first-in-human studies through to Phase 2a for all therapeutic areas in the company, and Molecular Sciences is part of this function to enable biochemical determination of whether the targeted pathway is being interdicted, whether exposure:response relationships can be generated (to inform dose ranging), and in which patient populations the therapeutic may be more efficacious (should that be necessary). He is well known in the field of protein chemistry, and a pioneer in the field of proteomics. He has published extensively and is a frequent guest lecturer. After leaving Amgen in 2000, he served as Vice President of Proteomics at the Celera Genomics Group and then as Chief Scientific Officer of Farmal Biomedicines, LLC. While at Celera, he established the company's initial foray into protein-based drug target discovery and validation in oncology, building a large group of cell biologists, protein chemists and mass spectrometrists whose efforts resulted in the identification of cell surface targets for therapeutic development and diagnostics, a number of which have been licensed to Pharma and Biotechnology companies. Dr. Patterson first worked at Amgen from 1993â€"2000 progressing from a Research Scientist to Department Head, ultimately leading the Department of Biochemistry and Genetics.

ROCKVILLE, Md, Nov 16 - Scott Patterson said Thursday his first mission as Celera Genomics' newly appointed senior director of proteomics would be to ramp up staff as he prepares to begin generating proteomics data early next year.

Formerly Amgen's associate director of research and head of its department of biochemistry and genetics, Patterson, 38, is planning to hire 60 new employees, including cell biologists, protein chemists, mass spectrometrists, and LIMS experts. He said Celera would also have to scale up its computational capacity.

In the first stage of operations, Patterson said that Celera's proteomics team would aim to characterize the "important" proteins for drug-target development.Eventually the company hopes to characterize the entire human proteome.

" We're set up to do many more sets of experiments than one would normally envisage," Patterson told GenomeWeb."The scale of the operation attracted me to this position.Celera has the demonstrated ability to do industrial-scale science and an informatics infrastructure."

Patterson said the data would help to add value to the Celera Discovery System.Celera will also seek out exclusive proteomics partnerships with big pharma.

Patterson said the proteomics center would use Applied Biosystem's latest MALDI TOF/TOF mass spectrometers as well as chromatography and electrospray technologies.Patterson will also evaluate Ruedi Aebersold's isotope coded affinity tags technology, although he said it still required more work from Applied Biosystems, which has the license.

Proof of principle studies are expected by the end of this year, Patterson said.

Patterson is credited with developing Amgen's proteomics program as well as its mouse genetics platforms. Before joining Amgen, Patterson was an investigator at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. He received a PhD in physiology at the University of Queensland in Australia in 1989.

Their job is to run a gauntlet of questions about drugs in the early phases of development, says Scott Patterson, Amgen's executive director of medical sciences. Is the drug hitting its intended target on human cells? What affect is it really having on the biological pathway envisioned in the lab?Can the samples offer insight into the best possible dose?Perhaps most importantly, can the samples show Amgen how to stratify patients based on who's likely to benefit from the drug, and who isn't?

"This gives us greater confidence in our drugs as they move through the pipeline," Patterson says.
