Jay Patel, owner of Powers Wine and a man of his word, just shrugged all week when reporters and customers asked if he knew who the winner was.

"She came by the first day.She told me not to tell the media," Patel confessed yesterday at the Massachusetts Lottery headquarters in Braintree, where he came to witness the hoopla as his favorite newly rich customer picked up her check and faced the TV cameras for the first time.

"It is good to be a part of history," Patel said.
    ...
Patel said Williams' secret was burning a hole in his soul, trying to get out, as the excitement about Lowell's big winner mounted.

"It was very hard.I couldn't sleep for the last four days," Patel said. But he never dreamed of letting the multimillion-dollar cat out of the money bag.He told reporters all about the speculation that was swirling around.Butter would not have melted in his mouth.

Patel, who has owned the store for two years, added that he is happy Williams is the one.

"She's local. We've known her for a long time. She's a regular customer," Patel said."That's what I was hoping, that someone would win from Lowell, a local customer, somebody regular.I'm happy for her."

As the selling agent, Patel received $50,000.He said that is going toward bonuses for his employees, some charitable donations and a new car for his wife.
