    Wayne Pasanen March 27, 2009 - (Waltham, MA) - Lowell General Hospital physician Wayne E. Pasanen, M.D. has been named 2009 Community Clinician of the Year by his physician peers of the Middlesex North District Medical Society. The Community Clinician of the Year Award was established in 1998 by the Massachusetts Medical Society to recognize a physician from each of the Society's 20 district medical societies who has made significant contributions to his or her patients and the community. The Middlesex North District is comprised of more than 200 physicians who live and work in 11 communities in the Lowell area. The award will be presented April 29 at the district's annual meeting at the Vesper Country Club in Tyngsboro.

    A resident of North Andover, Dr. Pasanen has been practicing at Lowell General Hospital since 1974 and has been Vice President of Medical Affairs at the hospital since 1993. A graduate of the University of Vermont College of Medicine and a board-certified emergency physician, he is the founder and president of Merrimack Valley Emergency Associates.

    He is a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Medicine, a Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine, and a Diplomate of the American Board of Emergency Medicine. He is also the medical director of several independent methadone programs in eastern Massachusetts and the medical director of the inpatient, behavioral health service addiction treatment program at Lowell Community Health Center located at Tewksbury Hospital.

    Active in a number of civic organizations, he has served as a board member of the Lowell YMCA, a member of the Governor's Task Force on Alcohol Abuse and Highway Safety, and a member of the North Andover Citizens Advisory Committee for Drug-Free Schools. He is currently a corporator of Lowell General Hospital and president of the Lowell Transitional Living Center.

    Also active in professional organizations, he is a past president of the Massachusetts Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians and past president of the Massachusetts Society of Addiction Medicine. He is a clinical instructor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, a clinical instructor in the physician assistant program at Northeastern University, and adjunct assistant professor at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.
