Alison has been a practicing artist since graduating from Norwich School of Art and Design in 1997, where she was the only student in her class to be given an exhibition on the strength of her graduate show.Since then she has had numerous shows, both solo and with groups of other artists, around the country.
Textiles are Alison's medium, with a particular interest in exploring the possibilities of quilts. In her textile pieces she works to manipulate the surface though the piecing of coloured cloth and stitching /painting into the surface. The pieces range in size for 10cm x 10cm to 3m x 3m.The largest would traditionally be seen as quilts for beds, but she is attempting to subvert the idea of quilt = bed, by introducing elements into the surface and/or structure that make it impossible to use it as a utility textile.
Alison uses both hand and commercially dyed cloth to produce quilts that visual explore colour and contrast of light and shade. She uses drawing as an essential part of the creative process.Applying colour mark and line to paper or cloth with pencil, acrylic paint and stitch.Preliminary drawings are sketched, but she then allows the work to guide as to where the next line or mark should be placed.
