    Dr .S. Parthasarathy
    ...
Dr S. Parthasarathy was born on the 24th March 1940 at Thillaisthanam village near Thanjavur. He obtained his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Physics from the University of Madras in the years 1960 and 1962 respectively. He obtained a Ph.D. degree in 1963 from the University of Madras. In 1965 he became a lecturer in the department of Crystallography and Biophysics where he is currently working as a Professor.

Dr Parthasarathy has tackled different types of problems that are of interest in X-ray Crystallography by using Probability and Statistical methods. The development of a comprehensive Fortran program for space group determination using intensity statistics, devising new statistical techniques for the determination of the scale and overall isotropic temperature factors, a thorough analysis of the relative importance of the various factors on the measurability of Bijvoet differences in the heavy atom derivatives of proteins and a systematic study of the relative behavior of different types of R-indices in the various stages of crystal structure analysis are some of his important contributions to X-ray Crystallography. The tables of measurability of Bijvoet differences and R-indices obtained by him and his groups are useful to experimental crystallographers as a ready reckoner.

Dr Parthasarathy has published 92 research papers in leading international and national journals. He is the joint author of the book entitled, Some Statistical Applications in X-ray Crystallography. This book has also been translated into the Russian language. He was awarded the Madras University Raman Research Prize (Gold medal) for the year 1966. He was deputed by the University of Madras as a post-doctoral fellow to the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge, UK during Sept. 1969 - Sept. 1970 for doing research in theoretical Protein Crystallography.

Dr Parthasarathy has guided several students for the doctoral degree. He has organised international meeting on Crystallography and World Scientific Publishing Co. (Singapore) and New Age International (P) Ltd. (India) has published the proceedings of these meetings as edited volumes respectively. He was a member of (i) the National Committee for the International Union of Crystallography (I.U.Cr.), (ii) the Calendar Sub-Committee for the I.U.Cr and (iii) the COSTED Travel Fellowship Selection Committee. He was a guest scientist at the Department of Crystallography, University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands during 1997. He is a life member of the Indian Biophysical Society. He is currently a member of the I.U.Cr. Teaching Commission.

In recognition of the significant work that Dr Parthasarathy has carried out in theoretical X-ray Crystallography, the Tamilnadu State Council for Science and Technology is privileged to award him with the TAMILNADU SCIENTIST AWARD (TANSA) for 1998 in the field of Physical Sciences.
