At Jefferson High School, Parson wrote for the newspaper and the yearbook.She attended San Antonio College before pursuing journalism studies at the University of Texas at Austin.
At UT, she was an editor on the Daily Texan.She received her degree in 1974.
In Austin, she joined the staff of the Volunteers for Educational and Social Services (VESS).
VESS founder Archie Gress said Parson was a "crucial part" of the organization's team during its first 10 years.

Parson was VESS secretary and public relations professional from 1972 until 1985.

Parson was a volunteer, too.She taught religious education and confirmation classes in Catholic churches in Austin and San Antonio for more than 20 years.
A Boerne resident since marrying Larry Parson a few years ago, the mother of three was giving confirmation classes at St. Peter the Apostle Church while being treated for cancer.
Jody Garcia, a marketing specialist with the San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department, said Parson completed the last confirmation class in February.
