Graham Parry, an Asia economist with Lehman Brothers, forecast a 3.2 per cent deflation rate for last month, compared with the consensus view of minus 1.5 per cent.
Mr Parry said deflation in Hong Kong was still being affected by anaemic demand in the domestic economy, the sharp drop in the cost of oil, the effects of deflation in China, the strong Hong Kong dollar and depreciation of the yen.
However, the property market was stabilising.
Electricity, gas and water costs recorded a year on year fall of 2.7 per cent last month, while the alcoholic drinks and tobacco sectors showed the only positive movement by rising 5.5 per cent.
