Research is the key to solving the complex problems of heart disease and right here in our province, 64 world-class scientists are receiving financial aid enabling them to forge ahead on some of the most innovative research being done in Canada.Their determination, their enthusiasm and their skills represent a guarantee of progress to come.

Heart research improves the quality of care in Alberta hospitals; reduces medical and health-care costs; improves the quality of life for survivors, patients and those at risk; gives Albertans the knowledge they need to make heart-healthy choices; keeps the best minds in Alberta at our universities and hospitals; trains the next generation of physicians and scientists; and saves lives.

The foundation depends entirely on donations raised through the Heart Fund and Stroke campaigns, special events and corporate support.

John Paquet, Executive Director for the Alberta Heart and Stroke Foundation, Canada, had been looking for ways to incorporate fund-raising activities for his association while creating community wide involvement.He developed the concept for a duck race at an Irish Pub in Ireland.Patrons enjoyed placing wagers on local races that employed the use of duck decoys.He returned home with the idea, transforming it into a duck race fund-raiser.
