NUM national deputy general secretary Archie Palane said yesterday that a smaller producer, Northam Platinum, would also be affected by the action.
He said the union was awaiting final dates for hearings from the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) before deciding on whether to proceed with a strike.
"Our wage talks with Angloplat, Implats and Northam have all deadlocked," he said."If the CCMA mediation doesn't work, we could see the first major crosssector strike in platinum mining."
The CCMA hearing with Northam was scheduled for September 17, and the union should get dates for its hearings with Angloplat and Implats this week, said Palane.

Implats, which employs 28500 people, is offering NUM members a 6,5% wage increase , while the union was seeking an 8,5% increase, Palane said.
In Implats' case, it has settled with unions Solidarity and the United Association of SA at 7% for the coming year, as part of a previously signed agreement.
"If Implats has settled with the white unions at 7%, then we will not settle for anything less," Palane said.

The union was also seeking a R3100 monthly entry-level wage for surface miners , said Palane.
