Carmen is a Detective with the Springfield Police, working in the Youth Aid Bureau.Carmen's primary responsibilities are to investigate crimes and to look for missing children.Carmen might spend time questioning suspects, examining a crime scene, and taking statements from witnesses.
Carmen did not plan on being a police officer but when her best friend urged her to take the entry exam for the police academy, she thought she would give it a try.Carmen passed the exam and spent 22 weeks training at the Police Academy in Springfield.Carmen has a high school diploma and would eventually like to get an Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice.She says that to advance to higher ranks it is important to have a college degree.
Carmen likes everything about her job.No day is the same.She gets to be physically active but also uses her mind.The only thing she does not like is all the bad publicity that police get.Although Carmen was concerned that being small might be a problem, so far she has not encountered any barriers in her career.
Carmen recommends that students thinking about becoming police officers take classes in both math and psychology.But, she says that developing good common sense is just as important.Carmen\rquote s advice: "Finish school.Stay out of trouble.Don't hang out with the wrong people.Set goals for yourself."
