When a mother goes into a hospital planning to have a baby and comes home without a baby, it is a very shocking experience, said Owens.

Owens said the creation of a grass-roots coalition would create a "splintering effect on quality care in the region," and encouraged the health department to continue to "combine forces and services."

Owens countered by saying that different programs work for different counties, and the coalition was merely offering a "tool" that could be used at the county's discretion.

"This is about community outreach and education," Sharon Owens, director of Healthy Start, explained.

Sharon graduated from Florida State University in Panama City with a degree in Social Work. She has worked with Healthy Start for 3 years and previously was the Social Services Director for the Salvation Army for over 3 years.

The passion she has for moms and babies comes from having two of her own, Charlie who is 7 and Olivia who is 4.

"Our pantry is very low on dry goods and it will be another month before we have our food drive", said Sharon Owens, Director of Social Services.Ms. Owens went on to say, "We do not want to have to turn anyone away.We know that many people are in need and we have already seen an increase in the number of families seeking help for the holidays."

Donations of these food items would be greatly appreciated by the families in need.The items can be brought to The Salvation Army Administration office located at 1824 West 15th Street (to the left of The Thrift Store).
