Sharon Owens, deputy executive director of Home HeadQuarters, said people need to pay attention to big ticket items like the roof, furnace and electrical system when house hunting.Check and make sure they're not rusted or old because they will cost thousands of dollars to replace, she said.
"Those things are expensive," Owens said."So five or 10 years down the line, you're not saddled with those major costs after you move into the house."
If you failed to examine the house carefully, make sure you hire a professional housing inspector, Owens said.Cost for a housing inspector ranges between $275 to $350.
Another good way to educate yourself about the process of buying a house is to take a home buyer education class. For information about classes with Home HeadQuarters visit www.homehq.org/homeownership/education.html or call 474-1939.
Tyler and Owens offer some tips on what you should look for while shopping for a house to make sure your new home is financially fit.
