"This is an issue that has never been sufficiently addressed," said Shannette Owens, a social worker with ElderServe who is leading the group.
Last night, the group held its first, invitation-only seminar that addressed survivors' rights.
Over the next several months, it plans to offer more sessions on anger, understanding the legal system and other topics.Organizers are also discussing ways to provide one-on-one counseling and other activities that can empower victims and help them deal with grief.
During last week's meeting, attended by four women whose sons have died in the past two years, Owens told them, "You ladies are survivors."
A child's death is "not something you get over," she said.

"We want to make sure that you can cope," Owens told the mothers.
