Anne Ovington, Coordinator of the Ballarat Region Seed Bank explained that collecting and handling native seed requires an understanding of a range of regulations, as well as technical skills.

"Seed collection is a skilled occupation and it requires an overall understanding to know the best places and times for seed collection and flora identification".

"It is important to keep genetic diversity in mind, as well as keeping the proper plants in the correct region, because there are a number of other collection and cleaning protocols involved.These types of training days provide us with a best possible opportunity to do make sure seed related activities are done right", Anne said.

"We are hoping to foster a network of local seed collectors that can collect and sell local native seed for our revegetation works," said Anne Ovington, Project manager, Ballarat Region Seed Bank.

"Participating in one of these workshops would be a great starting point for being involved in the seed collection industry," Ms Ovington said.

The workshops are to be held at the Victorian Landcare Centre (Daylesford Rd Creswick) from 9.30 to 3.30pm on Friday, 9 December and on Friday, 16 December between 10am and 4pm at the Campbells Creek Community Centre, Castlemaine.Registration for these free workshops is required by 6 and 13 December respectively.
